ARRANGEMENTS FOR QUEEN’S GUARD AND QUEEN’S LIFE GUARD DURING THE LONDON 2012 OLYMPICS AND PARALYMPICS
Updates Press Release of 15 June: “Queen’s Life Guard and Queen’s Guard Changes during London 2012”

London Disrtict Headquarters confirmed the following updated arrangements for Queen’s Guard and Queen’s Life Guard will now apply for the period of the London 2012 Olympics and Paralympics.

QUEEN’S GUARD (Buckingham Palace).

For the Olympics, up to and including 12 August 12, Queen’s Guard will break with tradition and mount 24 hour Guards during the early part of August, except when the ‘Field of Play’ (an Olympic arena and surrounding controlled area) takes precedence.

Usually in August, Queen’s Guard mounts every 48 hours on odd dated days (1st, 3rd, 5th etc).
However, this summer (from 26 July – 12 August 12), Queen’s Guard will mount every day starting at 10.37 hours, except for the following dates when it will not take place:

  • Sunday 29 July 12
  • Saturday 4 August 12
  • Tuesday 7 August 12
  • Saturday 11 August 12

Olympic Marathon Days. For the days of the Women’s Marathon (5 August) and the Men’s Marathon (12 August and the last day of the Olympics), Queen’s Guard will again break with tradition and mount Guard starting at 14.07 hours.
On both Marathon days, the oncoming Guard will be found from 1st Battalion Coldstream Guards, based in Windsor.

Queen’s Guard will revert to its normal 48 hour Guard Change routine on Monday 13 August.

QUEEN’S LIFE GUARD (Front/Tilt Yard, Whitehall).

The Queen’s Life Guard has broken with tradition and now mounts Guard in Horse Guards Avenue, opposite Horse Guards.

The Queen’s Life Guard will mount every day at 11.00 hours except:

  • Sunday 29 July: 1445 hrs
  • Saturday 4 August – there will be no QLG change
  • Sunday 5 August: 1515 hrs
  • Tuesday 7 August: 1500 hrs
  • Sunday 12 August: 1500 hrs
  • Sunday 9 September: 1500 hrs – day of the Paralympics Marathon

The time given is when the New Guard will arrive at Horse Guards Avenue.

The Queen’s Life Guard will move back in to the Front/Tilt Yard to mount Guard on 10 August 12 for the rest of the Olympic season, and should be back on Horse Guards Parade by the middle of September.
